Ted Lasso Embodies Everything You Need to Know About Leadership
If you haven’t watched Apple TV’s Ted Lasso, it’s time to bite the mouthguard — er, bullet.
My hesitation toward starting this wholesome, feel-good series was its seemingly soccer-centered theme. [Insert buzzer sound here.] I was dead wrong for thinking this show was about sports.
While Ted Lasso was penned about an American, minor league football coach accepting a high-profile British football (read: American soccer) coaching position, the show is far from being centered upon athletics. It’s about people. It’s about relationships. It’s about acceptance.
Everything you need to know about leadership is embodied by Ted Lasso himself — a mustached, Kansan optimist with a task on his plate larger than his homeland’s infamous Ball of Twine.
Having started a new position recently where I’ve felt like the tiniest fish in the biggest imaginable pond, I felt an immediate, heartfelt connection to Lasso, the ultimate underdog. He knows (although questions) that he has what it takes, but it’ll take time to get there. Despite his obvious lack of professional coaching experience, you still want him to succeed.
Believe: If there’s one word that embodies Ted Lasso as a character, it’s believe. Ted believes in his players, he believes in club…
